In this section, residents living in the South Hams area can find information on recycling and refuse collection, specific to this district.

What can I recycle in the South Hams?

The following materials are collected in the South Hams District Council area:

Clear Sacks

  • Plastic bottles only (no lids please)
  • e.g. fizzy drinks, yoghurt drinks, milk, shampoo, detergent and medication bottles (Please rinse and squash where possible)
  • Aluminium and steel food/drink tins and cans
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Jar lids
  • Clean foil
  • Foil yoghurt pot lids (please rinse)

Please do not place any other types of plastic in your recycling sack.

Blue Sacks

  • Newspapers and magazines
  • Junk mail
  • Envelopes (including windowed)
  • Catalogues
  • Telephone directories/Yellow Pages
  • Books
  • Gift wrapping paper
  • Toilet/kitchen paper tubes
  • Cardboard egg boxes
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Cardboard packaging (e.g. cereal boxes, frozen food and washing powder boxes)
  • Greetings cards
  • Printing/writing/shredded paper

Please do not place any wet of dirty paper, drinks cartons in your blue sacks.

Brown Bin

  • All raw and cooked food waste including:
  • Meat
  • Fish
  • Egg shells
  • Bread
  • Vegetable peelings
  • Paper kitchen towels etc.
  • Grass cuttings
  • Weeds and leaves
  • Hedge clippings and small branches (upto 10cm in diameter)
  • Clean straw
  • Large pieces of brown cardboard or excess cardboard, that may not fit into the blue recycling sacks

Please do not place any plastic, soil or rubble items in your brown bin.
