Why compost at school

In this section

Composting is not only great for the planet, it is also an excellent way to engage pupils with the outside world including eco systems, growing your own food and the problems of food waste in landfill sites.

Schools produce alot of waste which can be used to make great compost. While food waste makes up around a fifth of household waste it contributes to nearly half of all waste that is produced by primary schools and a third from secondary schools.

Why compost your waste at school?

  • It is good for the environment (less waste to landfill)
  • Can save schools money through reduced waste cost.
  • It provides fantastic learning opportunity - Composting can be linked to many areas of the curriculum including science, geography, citizenship, literacy and numeracy through topics such as recycling, ecology, food production and soil fertility.
  • It is a ‘hand’s on’ project that children can get involved in and take ownership of.
  • The compost you create can also be used in the school grounds as part of the wider learning objectives encouraging children to grow their own fruit and vegetables and linking with the Healthy Schools Programme and develops gardening skills.
  • Helps schools work towards Eco-schools
