Recycling FAQ

Can cars be recycled at the Recycling Centre?
No, they have to go directly to a scrap metal merchant.

I missed my refuse collection, what can I do with the waste?

Kitchen waste is not accepted at Recycling Centres. If the collection has been missed, the waste must be stored until the next collection round. If the District Council has missed the bin then you should contact the District Council direct.

I want to report an abandoned car.
Phone the District Council in which area the car is abandoned, with exact details of the location.

My dustbin hasn't been emptied/recycling hasn't been picked up
.
It is District Council responsibility. Please phone your District Council.

My freezer broke down, what do I do with the spoiled food?
The spoiled food needs to go to a landfill site, or transfer station if it is from your own household. For more information please phone 0845 155 1010.

What can I do with my farm plastic?
There is currently no scheme for this. Please get in touch with the Environment Agency 08708 506 506 for the best method of disposal.

What do I do with animal bedding?
It should be placed double wrapped into your dustbin. Large quantities will have to be directed to a landfill site. (Waste produced at kennels/stables is trade waste and would therefore have to be paid to be taken by the weighbridge.)

What do I do with cooking oil?

This could go into your dustbin, if sealed and is a small amount. For larger quantities, please see 'A to Z list' -- 'recycling from home' --'cooking oil'. Do NOT pour down the drain.

What do I do with electric heaters?
If they are night storage heaters they contain Asbestos and have to be dealt with as Asbestos. Please phone 0845 155 1010 for more information.

Flat glass should not go into a bottle bank, but can go to a Recycling Centre in a clearly labelled, secured box.

What do I do with household chemicals/hazardous waste?
If you have small quantities of garden or household chemicals, petrol, diesel or photographic chemicals, a limit of 5 litres will be accepted at a Recycling Centre. These should be labelled and securely sealed and given to the site operator for storage in the hazardous waste container.

What do I do with car batteries?
These can go into special cages at a Recycling Centre.

What do I do with caravans/boats?

These cannot be accepted at a Recycling Centre. They need to be directed to a landfill site, transfer station or a scrap metal merchant.

What do I do with construction and demolition waste, including significant improvement/renovation works?
Strictly speaking, this is not household waste. However, we allow 1/2 tonne or 12 large bags in a 6 month period, i.e. a small trailer per household, into one of our Recycling Centres. Larger quantities need to go to a landfill or a skip needs to be hired.

Where can I take my tyres?

Up to 5 tyres in a 12 month period will be accepted, per household, at a Recycling Centre. Wheels will not be accepted unless separated from the tyres.

Where can I recycle ordinary household batteries?

Household batteries are excepted at all Recycling centres. Some district authoritys also collect these as part of the recycling collection service. You can find out what your local council collects by clicking here and choosing the area you live.
