Is a tiny tumbler worth it for good compost?
Have you ever thought about making your own compost, but didn’t know where to start? Or maybe your backyard is too small for a compost heap or other traditional composting set up? Well, look no further, because our good friend Dawn has put this tiny but mighty tumbler to the test.
Have you composted before?
“Yes, a long time ago, using the dalek style compost bin. I found it difficult then, as I didn’t have the right information available, to help the composting process. So, I wasn’t layering the green and brown contents and didn’t add any worms!”
Did you have any initial doubts about trying the tumbler? What do you think after using it?
“I didn’t have any doubts as to the tumbler design being a better option. It’s smaller than many other types, so I knew it would fit in my small garden space more easily. Also, I like that gravity helps the ready compost to tip out at the bottom… plus, it’s so much easier to mix than digging around using a fork or spade to do that.”
Would you recommend the tumbler?
“I would 100% recommend the tumbler to anyone, especially to get going initially with composting. I’ve since bought another tumbler, so one can be left to compost when full and then use the other to keep the process going. Alternating between them at the different stages.
My new tumbler is now nearly full too, but the one I got last spring is now ready (apart from a few twigs in there), so I’ve emptied it all into an old storage container so I can start filling it again 😊. I picked out as many of the worms as possible, to pop back into the tumbler with a bit of the newly made compost.”
Two words to describe your composting experience:
“Useful and satisfying.”
